53HERAEUS | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | LOCATIONS OF THE FUTURE Heraeus has more than 115 locations worldwide. The four locations in the German Rhine-Main area alone have the same extent and complexity as a small town: more than 4,100 employees work, research and produce in about 200 buildings. Heraeus Site Management (HSM), under the direction of Reiner Dollansky, is responsible for achiev- ing a smooth operation. Regarding site development, he wishes to create with his team the basis for more compet- itive and efficient locations. And in this respect, the basic structure of the company headquarters in Hanau will be further developed as a high priority and is to be a refer- ence for all other locations worldwide. How can a building be planned so that it motivates researchers and developers from entirely different di- visions of the corporation to work together? How can a modern research center be included in the architecture of an established industrial location? And be cost effective and energy efficient at the same time? Together with a team of architects, expert planners, internal experts and future users, Reiner Dollansky is currently considering various drafts for the design of the new Heraeus Innovation Centre, which is to be realized by the spring of 2017 at the headquarters in Hanau. This group meets regularly to discuss the new building. “The cornerstone is to be laid in late summer 2015, but there are still a lot of open ques- tions to be clarified,” says the site manager. More efficient structures for headquarters The new Heraeus Innovation Centre is part of an extensive site development project, which was officially started in 2014 at the Hanau headquarters under the keyword “Mas- terplan Heraeus Technology Campus” and is now managed by Dollansky. Since 1851, Hanau has been the headquar- ters of the technology group and despite the international growth in the past decades, it is still the central element and the largest single location. “As a family-run company, Heraeus is deeply rooted in Hanau. In order that this remains in the long term, we want to undertake a massive further development of the site in the coming years and make the structure which has developed over time much more efficient”, says Dollansky. The headquarters, which directly borders on Hanau’s town center, will thus become a blueprint for other worldwide locations, in that the orga- nizational and infrastructural principles may be used as a reference for other sites in future. For this purpose, the company is investing a high double-digit million figure in its headquarters. As part of the project, the headquarters which has grown historically will not only be restructured and organized according to the latest state-of-the-art criteria. The further development should also be used to develop the grounds further from a classic industrial site to a campus with an attractive working environment and multiple exchange op- portunities for employees. The two greatest challenges will be the location and the structure, which has developed over the decades. This is due to the vicinity of the town center and the adjacent residential areas, which makes an Modern Hanau Headquarters REINER DOLLANSKY, Head of Heraeus Site Management
