57HERAEUS | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | WORLD CLASS PRODUCTION Modern production sites are clocked by global economy. In order to ensure that production remains competitive in the future, processes, production technologies and the know-how of employees continuously need to adapt to technological progress. Heraeus is already well-placed in many areas of production. But many production facilities at the 115 locations work by very different sets of rules. By introducing its global Heraeus Production System (HPS), the group therefore streamlines and unifies the principles and standards of production at its locations. Christian Nasarow, Head of Operations Coordination, is responsible for establishing and introducing the system. He is sure: “The Heraeus Production System will help us improve our competitiveness in many areas and markets.” The kick-off event in Hanau, the first of its kind to gather about 200 production managers from locations all over the world already made one thing very clear: Something new is emerging – with particular and specific regard to cooperation across the borders of business areas and divisions. Passive listeners? Not at all. Everybody vividly discussed the key HPS elements and exchanged information. In a map exercise, participants worked in teams to develop a HPS production line – the solution with the best performance data was the winner. “You could almost feel the spirit in the room. This will be a good basis for the worldwide roll-out of the HPS.”, says Christian Nasarow. Warranty for exchange More exchange and cooperation plus uniform standards at a very high level – this is the central philosophy of the HPS. It is the perfect match on the new orientation Heraeus started for its entire organisation at the beginning of 2015. “Introducing the HPS was accompanied by placing pro- duction at the management level of the Global Business Units which means that we bring everybody responsible for production at Heraeus together”, says Nasarow. “Careful interchange, a shared knowledge and high-level visibility of production are thus guaranteed.” The HPS house illustrates the new production system: Heraeus’ employees and supervisors are the basis. Their know-how and knowledge from experience are indispen- sable. The success of production rests on three columns: quality, safety and productivity. These words cover many different factors which are standardized and measured periodically in the Heraeus Group. Roof and aim of the production system: Operational Excellence – top production performance. All production areas are intended to adopt and adapt to the system by 2020. Always aim for fully satisfied customers The specific know-how and knowledge from experience gained by the different production environment will not be challenged of course – quite on the contrary, it will be enhanced and extended. Everybody involved must still face the HPS claims, including fully satisfied customers and the avoidance of waste. “Some of Heraeus’ locations practice this excellence already. We believe, however, that we should more massively interlink the processes of development and learning in order to strengthen our position”, says Rolf Najork, Heraeus’ Chief Operating Officer (COO). “We will start using the process know-how available at one location to optimize the processes at another location. This will Global production system »Introducing the HPS was accom- panied by placing production at the management level of the Global Business Units which means that we bring everybody responsible for production at Heraeus together.« CHRISTIAN NASAROW
